Vice President Kamala Harris has secured endorsements from top Democrats just days after President Joe Biden named her as his replacement – but not from former President Barack Obama.
According to LifeSiteNews, Harris got the nod of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Alex Soros and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
“We are honored to join the president in endorsing Vice President Harris and will do whatever we can to support her,” the Clintons said in a joint statement. “Now is the time to support [her] and fight with everything we’ve got to elect her. America’s future depends on it.”
“It’s time for us all to unite around Harris and beat [former President] Donald Trump. She is the best and most qualified candidate we have,” said Soros, who is engaged to Huma Abedin, former vice chairwoman of Hillary Clinton’s failed 2016 presidential campaign.
Whitmer likewise threw her support behind Harris, calling her a “champion for reproductive freedom.”
“In Vice President Harris, Michigan voters have a presidential candidate they can count on to focus on lowering their costs, restoring their freedoms, bringing jobs and supply chains back home from overseas and building an economy that works for working people.”
Noticeably silent on Harris’ candidacy is former President Barack Obama, who Biden served under as vice president. In a statement released on July 21, Obama thanked Biden for his years of “service.” But instead of endorsing Harris, the 44th POTUS said he has “confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges.”
The endorsements by major Democrats, alongside Obama’s silence, followed Biden’s outright approval of Harris to take his place as the party’s presidential nominee. “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Harris as my Vice President, [and] it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for [her] to be the nominee,” the 81-year-old incumbent said.
According to The Hill, six states – Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Louisiana and Florida – have awarded their delegates to the vice president. This gives her a running total of 531.
Current party rules stipulate that candidates need at least 300 delegates for their name to appear on the convention’s ballot. A candidate needs to obtain at least 1,968 delegates, or a majority of the available 3,934, to become the party’s nominee. Given this, Harris’ name will surely appear on the ballot.
However, several personalities denounced Harris over her dismal track record, among them independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.). He blasted the vice president during a press conference after Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race. RFK Jr. also accused her of being “a product of the corporate control of our democracy.”
“Harris is a war hawk on Ukraine, she’s a war hawk on China,” the independent candidate said. “I don’t think she’s going to do anything about the national deficit. I’ve never heard her speak about the chronic disease epidemic.”
Vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance also blasted Harris, calling out the incumbent for having “co-signed Biden’s open border and green scam policies that drove up the cost of housing and groceries.” The senator for Ohio remarked: “She owns all of these failures, and she lied for nearly four years about Biden’s mental capacity – saddling the nation with a president who can’t do the job.”
Former Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard also criticized Harris’ incompetence in handling the southern border and decried the way she has been installed as the party’s nominee. Gabbard and Harris already have a history as both faced off during the Democratic presidential debate in 2019.
“The same people running the country with Biden as their figurehead will continue to run the country with Harris as their figurehead – or whichever Democrat may end up as their nominee,” the erstwhile congresswoman for Hawaii told Fox News. “The people who have actually been running the country are the unelected power elite from the national security state, [the] military-industrial complex, with the giant propaganda media acting as their mouthpiece.”
