Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is planning to set up a fundraising campaign for former President Donald Trump in Florida and Texas following a private meeting with him in April.
The three-hour meeting, held at the Shell Bay Club in Hollywood, Florida, was organized by real estate investor Steve Witkoff for the two Republican rivals to bury the hatchet and explore ways to support the campaign to take back the White House for the GOP.
During the meeting, DeSantis reportedly committed to supporting Trump against President Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential election. The meeting concluded with the two men shaking hands to symbolize their newfound cooperation.
“The conversation mostly concerned how we would work closely together to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. Also discussed was the future of Florida, which is FANTASTIC!” Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social. “I greatly appreciate Ron’s support in taking back our Country from the Worst President in the History of the United States.”
In response, anonymous sources disclosed that DeSantis is already making calls to donors, while his finance team is rapidly assembling a schedule that will likely include fundraising stops in Florida and Texas.
“We are actively working on plans to fundraise in support of President Trump, as well as other Republicans up and down the ballot,” said Taryn Fenske, a spokesperson for DeSantis.
Even before their meeting, DeSantis already announced his intentions to assist in fundraising campaigns for Trump to a group of donors and supporters during a private retreat at South Florida’s Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
“He did say it in front of a group of people at the Hard Rock,” confirmed a DeSantis adviser. The adviser stressed DeSantis’ commitment to supporting Republican candidates across the board, including Trump’s own campaign. (Related: DeSantis withdraws from presidential race, endorses DONALD TRUMP.)
“[Trump] has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old [Republican] guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed-over corporatism that [former South Carolina Gov.] Nikki Haley represents,” DeSantis said at the time. “I signed a pledge to support the GOP nominee and I will honor that pledge.”
Attendees of the retreat, including many prominent bundlers, are set to follow DeSantis’ lead in supporting Trump.
“I will follow the governor’s lead and I will do anything that he or President Trump ask me to do to help him win this election,” said Texas businessman Roy Bailey, a former co-chair of DeSantis’ national finance advisory board at that time of the retreat. “I know where there are DeSantis supporters all over Texas and all over the country that will want to help President Trump. So that’s what I’ll try to make happen.”
Meanwhile, a Trump campaign adviser mentioned they were unaware of DeSantis’ planned fundraising campaigns but stressed the importance of unity in defeating Biden: “Everyone should be working toward defeating Joe Biden and electing President Trump.”
