Distant cousins of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz have come out in support of former President Donald Trump in the Democratic candidate’s home state of Nebraska.
Charles Herbster, an agribusiness executive and cattle rancher who ran for the Nebraska Republican Party’s gubernatorial nomination in 2014 and 2022, recently posted a photo showing eight members of Walz’s distant family in the Cornhusker State posing in custom “Nebraska Walz’s for Trump” shirts in front of a “Trump 2024 Take America Back” flag. “Tim Walz’s family back in Nebraska wants you to know something,” Herbster quipped.
The photo was later reposted by Trump, who wrote on his Truth Social platform: “It is a Great Honor to have your Endorsement. I look forward to meeting you soon!”
The photo was initially posted on X by Herbster. Ron Edwards, Herbster’s spokesperson, noted that the people in the photo are cousins of the Minnesota governor, who is now the running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris.
“The family in the picture are the descendants of Francis Walz, who was brother to Tim Walz’s grandfather,” Edwards said.
The Nebraska branch of the Walz clan confirmed their relationship to the Minnesota governor in a message to the Associated Press.
“Shortly after Governor Tim Walz was named the Democrat Party Vice Presidential nominee, our family had a get-together. We had t-shirts made to show support for President Trump and J.D. Vance and took a group picture. That photo was shared with friends, and when we were asked for permission to post the picture, we agreed,” the written statement said. “The picture is real. The shirts are real. We are the Nebraska Walz family, and we are related to Gov. Tim Walz, our grandfathers were brothers. The message on the shirts speaks for itself, ‘Nebraska Walzs for Trump.'”
Sandy Dietrich of Alliance, Nebraska, Walz’s older sister and a former teacher, said she does not recognize the people in the photo but suspected they might be distant cousins.
Dietrich and Tim’s father, James Walz, died of lung cancer in 1984 when the future congressman and Minnesota governor was just a teenager. His father had been the school superintendent in Valentine, Nebraska.
“We weren’t close with them. We didn’t know them,” she said.
Tim Walz’s older brother, Jeff Walz, a former middle school assistant principal residing in Freeport, Florida, has also come out against Walz’s nomination.
“The stories I could tell. Not the type of character you want making decisions about your future,” wrote Jeff in Facebook comments unearthed by the New York Post. The 67-year-old added that he was “100 percent opposed to all his ideology.”
In remarks released Sept. 4 by News Nation, Jeff said he was annoyed that his younger brother would be Harris’ running mate. But he quickly added that doesn’t want to be involved with anybody’s campaign.
