During a campaign stop in Aurora, Colorado, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump announced that he would launch “Operation Aurora” if elected.
Operation Aurora was the name given by law enforcement in San Antonio when they arrested Tren de Aragua (TdA) gang members during a recent sweep. In an opinion editorial in the Daily Mail, Trump said that the notorious gang from Venezuela is now operating in American cities.
“Last year, 43 percent of all Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests were aliens with criminal convictions or pending charges for some 33,000 assaults, 3,000 robberies, almost 7,000 burglaries, 7,500 weapons offenses, 4,300 sex crimes, 1,600 kidnappings and 1,700 homicides,” Trump wrote, adding that in Chicago and Miami, police have confirmed the TDA gang is now operating in their areas. (Related: Aurora, Colorado adding $10M in police funding to combat increased Tren de Aragua gang activity.)
The influence of TDA extends to sports, with Venezuelan journalist Ronna Risquez explaining: “…their involvement in sports activities, more precisely in the deals of Venezuelan baseball players who sign for major league clubs in the United States. Investigations indicate that they are shadow partners in several training academies and that they charge a large percentage for each contract.”
“They are specifically known for their violence and their extortion… Meaning if you don’t pay your tax, [they] first shoot your wrist. If you don’t pay it again, [they shoot] you in the ankle; if you mess up and don’t pay it again, you’re dead,“ Ammon Blair, a former Border Patrol agent, said of the group.
During the Colorado rally on Oct. 11, Trump said he would invoke a 1798 law known as the Alien Enemies Act to carry out his version of Operation Aurora.
“We will send elite squads of ICE, Border Patrol and federal law enforcement officers to hunt down arrest and deport every last illegal alien gang member until there is not a single one left in this country,” the former president said. “And if they come back into our country, they will be told it is an automatic 10-year sentence.”
He also cited the data ICE shared in a letter to Texas Congressman Tony Gonzales. In the letter, it was indicated that there are more than 425,000 non-citizens in the U.S. who’ve been convicted of crimes, including homicide, robbery and sexual assault, who are non-detained. However, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security claimed that the data is being misinterpreted.
Last month, armed men broke into an Aurora apartment, threatened a tenant and fatally shot a 25-year-old outside. The attackers – three illegal aliens – were previously detained by Border Patrol but released into the U.S. under the Biden government’s policies, with Vice President Kamala Harris overseeing the border.
In another case last June, 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray was kidnapped, assaulted and murdered in Houston by two TDA members. Both assailants had been released into the U.S. by order of Kamala Harris.
During the same rally, Trump called for the death penalty for migrants who kill U.S. citizens, Reuters reported.
“I’m hereby calling for the death penalty for any migrant that kills an American citizen or a law enforcement officer,” Trump said to loud cheers from a large crowd of supporters. He already proposed an expansion of the death penalty for other offenders, including people convicted of sex trafficking women and children.
Observers have noticed Trump has hardened his anti-immigration policies in the final weeks of the election campaign. Illegal immigration is a top voter concern, and Trump is seen by most voters as the person best able to address it, opinion polls show.
